Sony had proved to be the leading game console developer in the market because of its continuing innovation towards gaming entertainment. Just recently, they had released their latest and newest PlayStation which is literally referred to as PS3 Slim dated September 1 this year. Three years ago, they had created their first marketed their PlayStation 3 in November whose sole intention was to not only surpass their 2nd PlayStation console but also beat other brands in the market.
With the latest market add-on the PS3 Slim with its predecessor still battling for supremacy which is the PS3 Fat, consumers are faced with a question on what to choose and buy. True enough they are made under the same umbrella brand which is Sony, but which would be the best, is it the newest or the oldest? Is it the one who had been in the market for years or the one who would dominate the latter years?As a consumer myself, let us end this long heated debate with a little comparison on both remarkable gaming consoles.
• Price and Storage. To make the latest PS3 Slim marketable and consumer oriented, the said console had been introduced in the market for $299. With the same price, you can get a PS3 Fat. The main difference between the two even with the same value is the hard disk size. The PS3 Slim already includes a 120GB Serial ATA device compared to the PS3 Fat which only comes with 80GB ATA device.
• Size and Dimensions. It would be very obvious to consider that the slim version of the PS3 is indeed smaller in size and dimensions compared to its fat version. Roughly the PS3 Fat measures 324 x 98 x 274 mm whereas PS3 Slim measures 290 x 65 x 290 mm. In terms of its weight the PS3 Slim is roughly 3kgs compared to 6kgs of the former model. With that said, the PS3 Slim is 33% smaller and 36% lighter.
• Processor. IBM confirmed that the new cell processor of the slim model is relatively faster compared to its fat siblings. This means less power rating to almost 34% than the previous. The slim also has a remarkable cooling system that has been redesigned and moved to a 45nm manufacturing process.
• OS support. While fellow geeks and experienced gamers had enjoyed pretty much mounting an operating system in PS3 fat, the slim don’t have much mercy on this side. This feature has been removed by its developers thus Linux personalization and installation is now history.
• Enhanced Audio. Fans of Blu-Ray films and into audio and sounds would definitely find PS3 Slim better than the PS3 Fat counterpart. Sony had eventually added to the audio output functions. Furthermore it supports Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master audio codecs.
• Bravia Sync. Sony had been known for its entertainment appliances thus the newest slim can easily go hand in hand with their bravia television set. This is a new feature that allows accessing of the PlayStation XMB with the TV remote. The console can also be on standby mode when the TV attached to it is also put on the same mode.
• Exterior Finish. The PS3 Fat is finished with a piano black color like its PSP counterpart. The PS3 Slim is now charcoal black that somehow shows greasy fingerprints when left unattended and unclean.These are just few of the comparisons that are relatively showcasing the PS3 Slim and Fat features.
